As more and more universities begin to make Grade 12 English a requirement for entry, an increasing number of students are beginning to ask the simple question. Why? What the universities know that the students do not is that a Grade 12 English education is absolutely essential in order to achieve success in any field in life, regardless of profession. This is due to a few vital facts that student tend to overlook.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not claiming that high school education is perfect and that everything learned in every class has a real life application Quite the contrary, high schools are designed to cover a wide range of topics that can apply to every field, but depending on what field you are going into, a lot of the effort that you put into attaining high marks in different unrelated courses will turn out to be in vain, as you may never revisit those topics again in life. The one exception to that rule is English. English is a language, and language is universal. Living in a wester country, English plays a major role in every interaction from business to day to day life. Universities shave begun to see this, and have acted accordingly. I’m here to let you in on the secret. Getting at least a Grade 12 English education is absolutely crucial to your success! Here’s why: First of all, English as a language is the base of all communication and face to face interactions. Many people take this communication for granted, thinking that as long as you know how to speak the language you can express ideas unto others with ease. Wrong. Having a simple understanding of the language is not enough to properly express eloquent ideas to others. The expression of ideas, or in other words persuasion is a very important skill to learn before going into any field. Having a good understanding of persuasion tactics and how to pitch ideas, supposer points, and express proof is the most important skill you can have. It can help you in many different endeavours, from pitching business to an investor, to seeling an item to a client, or even to persuade your medical patients to go ahead with a procedure that only you truly know is important to them. And that’s just scratching the tip of the iceberg. Second of all, English doesn’t just teach you the art of persuasion through communication; it also teaches you the how to emotionally and mentally manipulate an audience. Take for example pathos, egos, and logos. Knowing how to use and spot those basic literary devices can both help and protect you in many situations. Using them effectively in your speech or writing is a sure fire but discreet way to win over the hearts, and minds of your audience. Knowing of them will also protect you against falling prey to their effects. Essentially, these English devices (learnt in Grade 11 ad 12 English) that may have seemed useless at first, can actually help you to become a leader in any environment, and effectively manipulate the mental and emotional side of human beings. In short, having at least a grade 12 English education will expose you to many useful skills, and knowledge that is certain to help you achieve success in life. Like I mentioned earlier, these attributes are universal and can be used in any field. That’s why regardless of profession or career, all Universities would have grade 12 English as a requirement for entry.
